  • Support staff adverts now live

    Published 15/04/16, by David Groves

With just a small number of student places remaining for September, I am delighted to be back after Easter in the final pre-opening recruitment wave. I am pleased to be able to tell you more in this blog about the most recent five colleagues who will be joining me in September, as well as starting recruitment for our Teaching Assistants, Cover Supervisor, Student Support/Receptionist, Finance Manager, and Technician. Application packs are available now on the school website.

The teaching colleagues joining me are all excellent classroom practitioners who will bring the school motto 'Inspiring Learning' to life. I am delighted they will be part of the team:

    Teacher of PE: Ryan Surridge

Ryan graduated from Brunel University with a BSc in sports and exercise science before completing his teacher training qualification at the Institute of Education.

He started his teaching career at Canons High School in Edgware as a PE teacher before moving to become a senior teacher at Harris Academy Aspire, part of the Harris Federation. There he rose quickly to lead the Physical Education department. He created a successful and well-rounded PE curriculum in a brand new school giving his students access a wide range of sports and physical activities. He was an independent verifier for externally assessed examination marking and was in charge of all vocational courses for Harris Aspire.

Ryan’s enthusiasm for physical education is contagious. He comes to Pinner High School to develop an inclusive, safe and enjoyable atmosphere in PE. He aims to provide students with the physical, social and psychological skills to develop their own life-long relationship with sports. Ryan has been a successful youth football coach in the local community and currently plays competitively for a local club in the Middlesex County Leagues. He also has a new born son, who takes up the rest of his free time.

    Teacher of Spanish: Susana Fernandes

Susana studied at the University of Wales as well as Portsmouth University where she had the opportunity to study in Bologna, Italy and another year in Granada, Spain. After graduating in Spanish and Italian Studies, Susana worked for seven years in two multinational companies using her linguistic skills. She successfully completed a PGCE at St. Mary’s University College, London and she has since been teaching Spanish, French and Italian as well as conducting OCR Portuguese speaking exams in secondary schools. Susana likes to teach in the target language, miming, promoting spontaneous speaking, bringing culture to life in the classroom in a fun environment.

During school holidays she likes travelling to Portugal where her family reside. Susana enjoys Latin music and dance, especially flamenco, salsa and merengue. She enjoys travelling, and has recently been to Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Susana will also be teaching at Nower Hill High School in September.

Teacher of Mandarin Chinese: Yen-Chiao Fang

Yen-Chiao graduated from National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan with a BA in English Language before he started his teaching career at a Junior High School in East Asia. He wanted to study further and see more of the world, so completed his Master’s degree at the University of Bristol, where he gained a First Class MEd in Counselling in Education.

Yen-Chiao is keen to introduce the culture and history of China to his classroom, as well as the Chinese language. He is currently completing his PGCE in MFL Mandarin and EAL at the Institute of Education and is very excited to join Pinner High School. With the experience of training in his two successful placements, St Joseph’s College and Putney High School, where both of the schools have strong teams in teaching Mandarin, he aims to create a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere for learning Mandarin at Pinner High School.

    Teacher of Drama: Amanda Elliot

Amanda grew up in Pinner and attended Cannon Lane Primary School and Nower Hill High School. She went on to study Performing Arts at Amersham and Wycombe College and then the Central School of Speech and Drama, gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Acting and Musical Theatre, with Distinction. After working professionally for several years, Amanda decided her real passion was for teaching and has worked in education for the last twelve years. Amanda studied Shakespeare and Children’s Literature with the Open University and gained a Bachelor of Arts, with Honours, and has just been graded ‘Outstanding’ when awarded Qualified Teacher Status. She currently works at St Clement Danes School as a teacher of Drama and prior to that at Chesham Grammar school.

Amanda also has a great deal of experience teaching and directing for Youth theatre groups and has worked as a LAMDA teacher for several years. She currently runs a Youth Theatre organisation in Rickmansworth and her production of Peter Pan was nominated for the NODA London region Youngstars award last year. Amanda recently directed an open-air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Rickmansworth Players and enjoys performing with the society (when she has the time!) Her most recent role on stage was as Mrs Cratchitt in Scrooge and prior to that, Maria in The Sound of Music.

    Teacher of Humanities: Hannah Lowder

Hannah graduated from Nottingham University with BA Hons in Theology. She then went on to gain her QTS at St Marys University and has been teaching ever since. Hannah is currently teaching Religious Studies and History at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy, Hillingdon and has had the responsibility of developing new, inclusive and inspiring schemes of learning for her students. As well as teaching Humanities, Hannah is also Deputy Head of Year 9. This position enables Hannah to further develop her teaching in order to support every student she encounters. She looks forward to contributing to the House system of pastoral support at Pinner High School.

Hannah is a keen traveller uses this as an opportunity to further explore different traditions, cultures and religions around the world. She also has a keen interest in the arts and uses many musical and artistic influences in her teaching. Hannah is extremely excited to join Pinner High School and immerse herself in the wider community.

I received almost 300 applications for the 10 posts that are now filled, and I'd like to thank each one of those candidates. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing an application. At a time of recruitment crisis in many schools, I am utterly overwhelmed with the quality and quantity of those who want to contribute to our journey. Plenty more very engaging opportunities will be available in the years ahead. The search continues: as well as the current support staff adverts, recruitment for colleagues starting in September 2017 will begin in December of this year.

It's an exciting time to be a trailblazer!

  • Recruitment milestone

    Published 21/03/16, by David Groves

Whisper it quietly as it seems too good to be true, but after an intensive week of interviews Pinner High School is fully staffed with teachers. The quality and quantity of applicants made for some extremely difficult decisions over the last few days, between candidates who could all do a first rate job to bring life to the motto 'Inspiring Learning'. Successful candidates were always ones with very impressive passion, dynamism and subject knowledge. I look forward to sharing more details about my new colleagues in the coming weeks.

Teachers are routinely asked to teach a lesson during the recruitment process. As Head of a school with no students I had anticipated that this would be difficult! Local schools have been very hospitable in welcoming me and my candidates to their school for the day to lend me their classes. This has the added benefit of indulging my curiosity to see how different schools in the area operate in different ways. Last week Canons High and Rooks Heath were very welcoming, the previous week Nower Hill, and before that Hatch End and Bentley Wood. Being able to visit other schools so frequently is great for sparking new ideas for Pinner High School.

The next phase of recruitment will be for support staff, who will provide essential services including financial support, receptionist, technician and administrative duties. These adverts will be circulated after the Easter holidays.

I have enjoyed showing more and more families around Pinner High over the last few weeks now that offers of places have been made by the Local Authority. It is always exciting to meet children who will be joining the school in September; you'll be naming the school Houses on your induction day in June, the first groups in the sports teams will be designing the kit, the first Student Council leading the way, blazing the trail for others to follow. Those who are now considering the school are really welcome to come and visit as well. Just give Mary a call on 0208 465 6280 and we can book you in.

The countdown clock on the website is currently on 168 days to opening. It is ticking away fast!

  • Trail Blazers Graduate

    Published 21/03/16, by David Groves

As the curtains closed on our Year 13 Sixth Formers, the Pinner High Trail Blazers reached a significant milestone in their lives—their graduation. This momentous occasion signified the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and personal development. We celebrated the accomplishments and welcomed Mr Woolf back to be a part of the ceremonies.

The graduation of the Pinner High Trail Blazers represented a transformative journey of personal and academic growth. These exceptional students had overcome challenges, embraced opportunities, and acquired valuable skills that prepared them for the next chapter of their lives.

The graduation ceremony served as a platform to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the Trail Blazers. It was a time to acknowledge their outstanding academic accomplishments, leadership endeavours, and contributions to the school community. The ceremony recognised not only their individual achievements but also the collective spirit and camaraderie that had shaped the Pinner High experience.

As they embark on new beginnings, these wonderful students carry with them the memories, friendships, and experiences that shaped their high school journey. With boundless potential and a spirit of resilience, The Pinner High Trail Blazers are ready to leave their mark on the world, armed with the knowledge and skills gained during their time at our school.

To all Year 11 and Year 13 students:

As you approach your final exams, we want to acknowledge your hard work and offer our best wishes. Your dedication, adaptability, and perseverance have been remarkable. Remember that these exams are a culmination of your growth and resilience. Take care of yourselves and seek support from teachers and peers. Believe in your abilities and approach each exam with confidence. Your worth extends beyond these exams, and your future is bright. Embrace the challenge and let your brilliance shine. Good luck!

    Politics

A group of our politics students visited Haydon school to hear Alastair Campbell talk about his new book. He was very interactive with his talk and many of our students were able to share their thoughts on politics and ask questions. He was so impressed with our pupils afterwards. He shared his thoughts with LBC radio. 1.29 min -2.40 min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV487A0pLws

Author Manjeet Mann Inspires Students at Pinner High School

On Wednesday, May 10th, Pinner High School had the privilege of hosting a remarkable guest speaker, Manjeet Mann, the esteemed author of the acclaimed novels Run Rebel and The Crossing. The event aimed to provide students with a unique opportunity to delve into the world of writing and gain invaluable insights from a successful author.

Manjeet engaged our eager audience with anecdotes from her own writing journey, captivating them with tales of her career as a writer. She shared her personal experiences, triumphs, and challenges, enlightening students about the realities of pursuing a creative path. As she spoke, her passion for storytelling and the written word resonated throughout the room, inspiring the young minds in attendance.

One of the key highlights of the talk was when she discussed the inspiration behind her most recent novels. She shared how her own life experiences, as well as the struggles and triumphs of those around her, served as a wellspring of ideas for her stories. By weaving in the narratives of marginalised individuals, Manjeet emphasised the importance of breaking glass ceilings and giving voice to the underprivileged. Her novels serve as a platform for these individuals to be seen and heard, a testament to the power of literature in fostering empathy and understanding.

The event proved to be a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on our students. The visit served as a reminder that dreams are within reach and that their voices matter. It encouraged students to explore their creative passions fearlessly and to use their writing as a means to advocate for those less advantaged.

Sports Update: Year 9 and Year 10 Football Victories, KS4 Girls Harrow Borough Cup Champions, and Borough Athletics Qualifiers!

Pinner High School has recently been buzzing with excitement as our talented students have achieved remarkable successes in various sports competitions. From football triumphs to outstanding performances in athletics, our students have showcased their skills, determination, and team spirit. Let's dive into the highlights of these incredible accomplishments.

Year 9 Football Harrow Borough Cup - Undefeated Champions!

In a stunning display of skill and resilience, our Year 9 football team emerged victorious in the Harrow Borough Cup, capping off an undefeated season. The final match against Park High was a thrilling encounter that ended with an impressive 8-2 victory for our team. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire Year 9 team for their exceptional performance and unwavering determination!

Year 10 Football Harrow Borough Cup - Finalists in the Making!

The Year 10 boys' football team has also been making waves in the Harrow Borough Cup. With an impressive run in the competition, they have secured their place in the final. Their remarkable skills, teamwork, and perseverance have brought them to this stage, and we eagerly await their upcoming match. Let's rally behind our Year 10 team and wish them the best of luck in the final!

KS4 Girls Harrow Borough Cup - Back-to-Back Champions!

Our KS4 girls' team has once again triumphed in the Harrow Borough Cup, clinching the title for the second consecutive year. Their final match against Park High was a true display of talent and determination, resulting in a resounding 7-3 victory. The girls have shown remarkable commitment and skill throughout the competition, and their back-to-back championships are a testament to their hard work and dedication. We commend the KS4 girls' team for their exceptional achievements and commendable sportsmanship!

Borough Athletics Qualifiers - Pinner High School Shines!

Pinner High School's athletics team has reason to celebrate as nine talented students have qualified for the borough athletics team. These athletes have demonstrated exceptional abilities in their respective events, earning them well-deserved recognition. We proudly acknowledge their achievements:

    • Horacio: Qualified for the 200m event

Inspiring Art Exploration at Tate Britain: Year 12 A-Level Students' Visit

On Wednesday, May 19th, the Year 12 A-Level Art students from Pinner High School embarked on an exhilarating artistic journey at Tate Britain. The purpose of their visit was to conduct research for their fine art personal investigations, immersing themselves in the rich and diverse world of art. The students eagerly embraced the opportunity to engage with renowned artworks, seeking inspiration to fuel their own creative endeavors.

    MEP Programme

PHS students joined with schools across the country at the Year 10 Mandarin Excellence Programme National Conference (MEP). The event, Journey to the East: a Voyage of Discovery, featured fascinating talks about China’s history, politics, and cultural heritage, including brilliant sessions about Chinese animation, internet fiction, and music. Speakers from Cambridge University, King’s College London, Universities of London, and Oxford University led sessions on further Chinese study at university and using Chinese in the workplace.

Students were also addressed by Nick Gibb, Rt. Hon. Minister of State for Schools, who encouraged the MEP cohort in their studies, and praised their hard work. The conference ended with a live performance from the Mandarin-speaking band Transition. The main event was held at the sleek National Convention Centre in Birmingham, but students also had the chance to explore Birmingham's Chinatown and to enjoy a Chinese meal together.

Science Update: Pinner High School Celebrates Three Medicine Offers!

Pinner High School is proud to announce that three exceptional students, Julia, Nathan, and Nabil, have received offers to study medicine. Their outstanding achievements and dedication to the field of science have earned them this well-deserved recognition. We congratulate them on this significant milestone and celebrate their journey toward becoming future medical professionals.

Julia, Nathan, and Nabil have demonstrated exceptional aptitude and passion for the sciences throughout their time at our school. Their commitment to academic excellence, coupled with their genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others, has paved the way for these remarkable offers.

Veer one of our Sixth Formers has successfully completed phase one of STEM SMART with Cambridge University.  Each week Veer was set to work that complemented the work that he was doing as part of their school studies.  Students were also assigned a Cambridge student as a mentor, whom they will meet online once a fortnight to discuss a number of themes concerning studying at university, for example; university life, choosing courses and applying to university. Two live subject-focussed talks will also be given by researchers from the university about their cutting-edge work.

  • Hola Pinner!

    Published 15/03/16, by David Groves

Another successful appointment last week, this time to the Spanish team. Language learning brings so much to the cultural life of the school, to the vibrancy and diversity of our community, that I am delighted to have made such a strong appointment. There were almost 40 applicants for our Spanish role, and whilst the school is small my new colleague will teach at Nower Hill as well as Pinner High School. I enjoyed spending the day with the languages team at Nower Hill making the appointment and look forward to that partnership developing even further.

The DT refurbishment plans continue to develop. Choosing the colour scheme for the cupboards, work surfaces and floors made me feel like I was designing my own kitchen, but it was great fun. No surprises for guessing that the fittings are in keeping with the school colours!

I had more meetings with the Harrow Academies Trust catering contractor, and the Education Funding Agency. I also managed to attend my first seminar at the New Schools Network, for schools opening in September. It is a very supportive group, and I left feeling very pleased and a little smug at the pace of our progress! Interviews for the remainder of the teaching posts take place over the coming days, and I look forward to bringing you news of these appointments too.

  • Welcome Trailblazers!

    Published 07/03/16, by David Groves

With National Offer Day last week, Saturday was a big milestone for the school as I was able to meet some of the trailblazing students who have been offered places at Pinner High School in September. Instead of spending time planning and preparing, it was brilliant to welcome real students and their families through the door of what will very soon be their school. Some of them seemed as excited as I am! There is another event this Wednesday for anyone offered a place who couldn't make it at the weekend. Governors and I are delighted to be very nearly full. We have already had a number of enquiries from families not offered places, but who are now hoping to join us. If you are in this position, the best option is to contact Harrow Admissions Service, who coordinate all school places in the borough.

  • Refurbishment developments

    Published 22/02/16, by David Groves

I was pleased to receive an updated set of architects plans for the creation of the brand new technology facility at Pinner High School. The contractor has now been appointed by the EFA, and the programme is proceeding smoothly. Testing took place last week to investigate construction technicalities. I look forward to sharing photos of the work as it progresses. 3 new technology rooms; food technology, product design, and a graphics room promise to add considerably to our already impressive resources. The contract work with our ICT provider is also progressing well. I spent a day at the Department for Education in advance of receiving bids. Kitting out a school with the latest technology feels even more exciting than being in a sweet shop! Seeing our first full set of uniform is also really exciting, just in time to share with the families who find out next week if they have been lucky enough to get a place as part of the Pinner High School Traiblazers!
